The Brits and devolution

So, as said in an earlier post, I have (unfortunately) started working this week. At various stages while travelling I genuinely thought I was looking forward to working - having the possibility to do more than read maps/guides and aimlessly wander through churches, but after 3 days I can assure you my holiday travels are already just photos on a disc somewhere as I feel like I've not been on holiday at all!

However, it is not all bad, indeed a group of us went for end of week drinks last night, where we all traded travel stories and generally gave thanks that the week was over. So despite my initial fears that no one would sit with me during recess, all appears to be well. Most of the people I work with seem fine; there is obviously one fridge nazi whose sole reason for employment appears to be whinging about the state of the office bar fridge and regularly sends around emails threatening to chuck everything so the fridge can be cleaned... there's a kiwi guy who has already thrown down the gauntlett in the Australis vs New Zealand argument. I would have rebutted his arguments, but I couldn't understand a thung he sid.

And there are various other personalities that make up the standard office people mix - the over the top, slighlty manic, still hip with the young kids person; the one that possibly could be quite churchy and seems a bit humourless; and the other temps, equally confused and lost in a sea of "where do I find this..."

But despite the job being fairly dull, it's easy to get to, which is a big thing when you're not a morning person. There is nothing worse than waking up early each morning to drag yourself out of bed to a job you cannot stand, and I speak from experience having commuted long distances for most of my professional career.

My current commute is hilarious to me, and quite possibly the best part of my day to date. I have to catch an overland train (as opposed to tube) to my current office, so my office isn't in the business end of London. As a result of this, the mix of commuters on the train is diverse. In the morning there are standard people in business attire, and a growing population of young men all dressed as if they have walked off the set of 8 Mile. They have the shiny/skanky tracksuit, although from their petite build it's not because they frequent gyms, the backwards baseball cap and all the other paraphenalia associated with being a bad ass wannabe rapper.

But it's not their attire that first made me notice them, it's the size of their head. These guys have tiny, tiny heads. Seriously! They are like the reverse of the chuppa chup female/models here. It's bizarre. You have women walking around with heads the size of water melons and guys with heads the size of coconuts. It's like a Jim Henson's creature shop exhibition every day on the train!

Convinced I was going slightly mad and this wasn't really the case, I ran this past my new work friends last night at drinks and they agreed, guys from the UK have freakishly (and noticeably) small heads.

I can only assume their mothers are very happy about this but what does it mean? Other than, obviously, Easter Island not being a favourite destination. Easter Island

What possible Darwinian reason could there be for the maudlin youth of London to have freakishly small heads. This is a genuine question, so I hope you actually respond!

Oh and on local news update - Chris and Craig (former JJJ Today Today and Chaser's War on Everything/CNNN) are back on air for a limited season. If you can't listen via an actual radio, listen on line as these guys are so funny I literally almost crashed my car during one show I was laughing so hard.
